Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks
Steered by cloud fostering, digital companies and artificial intelligence (AI), regional need for information hubs is projected to expand nearly 20% every year through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projections that Southeast Asia’s data centre electricity use will certainly almost double by 2030 compared to 2024– a trend mirrored throughout the wider APAC region.
The APDCA participants consist of leading global operators, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.
Labelled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was launched on Oct 27 and outlines methods to minimize the environmental impact of information centers whilst fulfilling the climbing demand for electronic facilities in Asia-Pacific (APAC).
The white paper highlights best techniques to enhance energy performance across the data centre lifecycle– from location option, design and construction to operations and monitoring. It additionally advises plan actions to increase access to clean and renewable energy via stronger grid infrastructure and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Property developers are encouraged to collaborate closely with regulatory authorities and market associates to establish constant power efficiency criteria across the APAC markets.
Among the examples mentioned is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– a certification scheme jointly established by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to identify data centres with strong performance and energy-efficient methods.
” Balancing energy sustainability with the growing request for digital infrastructure is one of APAC’s defining hurdles,” says Jeremy Deutsch, chair of APDCA. “With the right policy frameworks, Asia-Pacific governments can guarantee that digital improvement developments hand in hand with net-zero ambitions.”
